Earth Day 2019

April 22, 2019 was a special day at Hearst Elementary School, Pleasanton. A small group of kids got together under the supervision of parents to commemorate Earth Day.

Preparations started few weeks prior to Earth day. The plan was to organize a small outreach event at the school. Kids got to work and prepared a flier. On one side of the flier was an Earth Day trivia and on the other side was a set of easy to adopt tips and practices to conserve energy and protect our environment. Kids used scrap materials and created lovely hats to wear on the day of the event. No outreach event is ever complete without giveaways. We spent modestly and purchased reusable tote bags as giveaways to those who answered the trivia right.

The day of the event was exciting not just for the kids but for the supporting parents as well. Parents helped set up a small booth along the walkway at the school grounds. End of the day bell rang sharp at 2:50 pm and a bunch of kids came dashing to get to work. They put on their hand-crafted Earth Day hats and that certainly invoked attention.

Curious kids and parents stopped by the booth. They eyes lit as they answered the trivia and their joy doubled upon winning a free tote bag. The tote bags came in variety of colors – green, yellow, blue, pink, and red. Kids showed more love for Green and Red than any other colors.

We wrapped up the event with a group picture and cleaned up. Kids stopped by the principal’s office and thanked the staff for their support in conducting the event. Feeling fulfilled, we headed back home.
